GÉANT

GÉANT is the European high-capacity backbone that interconnects European research and education networks with multiple connections of 100Gbps and offers advanced services to large research infrastructures and the entire scientific, education and culture community in Europe.
GÉANT European Map

Officially started in September 2004, today GÉANT interconnects over 50 million users in approximately 10,000 scientific, educational and cultural institutions across the continent. Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, over 1,000 terabytes of data are transferred every day to the GÉANT backbone.

In fact, the GÉANT network provides the high-speed connectivity required to share, access and process massive volumes of data. These data are generated by, and are essential for, diverse research and education communities in areas such as particle physics, bioinformatics, earth observation, drug discovery and art and culture.

Connections with the world research

Through the GÉANT network, GARR users are directly interconnected with the research networks of 60 countries in the world with the possibility of exchanging data and collaborating in real time from South America to the Pacific.

GARR is also an active part of international connectivity, hosting since 2004 one of the Points of Presence of the EUMEDCONNECT network at the GARR PoP in Catania.
