Job opportunity: we’re hiring a Network Engineer for our Rome office

GARR is looking for a Network Engineer to join the Packet Network team, which is responsible for the design, technological evolution, implementation and management of the GARR network, serving the research and education community in Italy.
Key responsibilities include:
- designing and developing the GARR network, ensuring high availability and scalability
- defining configuration models and national and international routing and peering policies
- releasing new network features and supporting internal training
- resolving anomalies and performing software updates, including through automation
- identifying effective measures to ensure network security
- evaluating and adopting new network technologies (hardware and software)
Who can apply
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- at least 5 years’ experience in the design, implementation and management of enterprise or service provider network infrastructures
- upper secondary school diploma (5-year course)
- proficiency in Italian (C1 level) and good knowledge of English (B1 level)
Required skills
We are looking for candidates with experience in:
- ISO/OSI architecture, TCP/IP stack, IPv6, routing protocols such as OSPF, IS-IS, MP-BGP; MPLS, LDP, Traffic Engineering (RSVP, SR), L2/L3 VPN/EVPN services, QoS, ethernet protocols (VLAN tagging/IEEE 802.1q, Link Aggregation/IEEE 802.3ad)
- multicast, NAT, ACL, policy, firewall filtering, netflow, telemetry
- CISCO and Juniper network equipment, their operating systems (JunOS, Cisco IOS), and configuration of Layer 2 and 3 network services on a geographic scale, both point-to-point and multipoint
- cybersecurity tools and best practices
- ability to plan, design and manage complex network architectures
- strong written and verbal communication skills
- ability to work in a team
- a proactive approach to training and keeping up to date in relevant fields
The following skills are considered a plus:
- DDoS mitigation systems, SD-WAN solutions, Ansible automation, Python programming
