The state of European Research Networks: the GÉANT Compendium 2024 is online

05 September 2025

The GÉANT Compendium 2024 is online – the leading report collecting data and analysis on National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in Europe.
For over twenty years, the Compendium has been a key reference point for universities, research institutions, and policy makers.

Every year, European NRENs contribute by providing information on infrastructures, services, users, and development strategies. The 2024 edition is now available on a dedicated interactive website, which allows users to explore the data, create custom charts, and identify key trends in the sector.

This year, the report comes in a renewed, more streamlined format, focused on highlighting the main developments. Among the new features are in-depth spotlights on specific research networks, showcasing their innovation, pioneering projects, and the challenges faced at a national level.

The report also includes data on the Italian network GARR which, with its more than 20,000 km of optical fibre and connections of up to 800 Gbps, is one of the most extensive and high-performing networks in the entire continent. GARR has always played a leading role within the GÉANT community, making a key contribution to shaping the development and future decisions for Europe’s digital research infrastructures.
