GARR at Trieste Next 2025: The scientific research Festival

12 September 2025

From 26 to 28 September, Trieste will host the 14th edition of Trieste Next, the Scientific Research Festival that each year transforms the city into a grand stage for science.

This new edition of Trieste Next, entitled “Life Within: Dialogues Between Science and Technology”, will explore the relationship between science and society and the role of technologies in redefining our lives. Over three days, more than 100 events and hundreds of international speakers will guide the public through the scientific and technological challenges of our time.

GARR will also be among the participants. On 27 September, from 10:00 to 11:15, it will take part in the conference “Supercomputing for Research”, alongside experts from the PNRR TeRABIT and ICSC – National Research Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing projects.

Speakers:

  • Silvia Calegari, Infrastructure Manager at INFN for the TeRABIT project
  • Massimo Carboni, Deputy Director and Chief Technical Officer at GARR
  • Alessia D’Orazio, Research Manager at ICSC – National Research Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing
  • Elisa Zuccolo, Senior Researcher at OGS

The panel will be moderated by Matteo Massicci from the ICSC communications office.

The session will provide a glimpse into the future of supercomputing in Italy: by the end of 2025, the new national cloud-based supercomputing infrastructure, funded by the PNRR, will be completed. Leading this initiative are the two strategic projects ICSC – National Research Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing, and TeRABIT – Terabit Network for Research and Academic Big Data in Italy.

During the panel, alongside the scientific representatives of these projects, participants will explore the achievements so far, the features of the infrastructure, and the opportunities opened up by supercomputing, with particular focus on quantum computing, a cutting-edge technology set to transform research and innovation.
