The new edition of GARR NEWS is now online
The new GARR NEWS is now online with a completely renewed design! This edition is dedicated to the theme of vision: a gaze projected towards the future, taking shape through innovative projects in various fields, all united by a common thread – tackling the challenges of the digital society.
In this issue we talk about quantum technologies: are we really approaching the quantum Internet? To find out, we interviewed Claudio Cicconetti from CNR, one of the leading experts in the field. Still on the trail of quantum, we take you to Friuli Venezia Giulia, where the University of Trieste leads three cutting-edge projects – Quantum FVG, QuFree and Equip-FVG – to build an ecosystem for secure quantum communication.
We continue with the European project SENSEI, coordinated by INRIM with the participation of GARR, which transforms optical fibres into distributed sensors for territory monitoring: a breakthrough for infrastructure maintenance, environmental surveillance, and also for data transmission quality.
Healthcare is also evolving thanks to DARE – DigitAl lifelong pRevEntion, a project for preventive medicine that combines clinical, environmental and genomic data, processed by artificial intelligence systems to outline personalised health trajectories.
In the field of culture, AI supports conservation: the Center for Cultural Heritage Technology at IIT digitises manuscripts, combats the illicit trafficking of cultural assets and creates datasets for research. All this is made possible by HPC infrastructures such as Franklin and by the support of high-performance networks.
The same applies to the digital twin of the national territory, developed by Spoke 5 of the National Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing (ICSC): a platform integrating geospatial data, AI models and supercomputing to mitigate natural disasters such as landslides, wildfires and earthquakes.
And finally, opera meets sustainability: Butterfly, a European project realised with LoLa technology from GARR and the Tartini Conservatory, demonstrated how it is possible to reduce the environmental impact of opera productions, while maintaining high artistic quality thanks to remote rehearsals between Modena, Gdańsk and Helsinki.
This edition portrays an Italy that experiments, innovates and builds bridges between disciplines and generations, thanks to advanced infrastructures, international collaborations and multidisciplinary skills.
Enjoy your reading!
