The new GARR NEWS is out!

This edition of GARR NEWS is dedicated to the theme of sustainability, understood in its broadest sense: technological, environmental, economic and social. Not as an abstract goal, but as a guiding principle for designing digital infrastructures that can stand the test of time, adapt to change and continue to generate value for the research and education community.

Sustainability also runs through the network. With PACMAN, the automation system that has transformed the management of the GARR-T network, we examine a change that is cultural прежде than purely technological: shared processes, repeatable models and more reliable management of increasingly complex infrastructures.

An in-depth look is dedicated to investments under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with the TeRABIT and ICSC projects, which have helped to build an integrated national infrastructure for networking, computing and data, reducing regional gaps and creating the conditions for long-term sustainable development.

Sustainability also means resilience and security. In a context shaped by the entry into force of the NIS2 Directive, we describe how the response to cyber threats is becoming increasingly collective, through initiatives such as Security Days, GARR working groups and collaboration among universities. We also examine the role of technologies such as DNSSEC and automation tools like TCS GARR in building reliable services.

Finally, sustainability is reflected in services. The experience of Ca’ Foscari University with eduVPN shows how remote access can be modernised while improving security and usability, reducing both costs and barriers. Looking more broadly, this issue also addresses the European dimension, from open science skills development with Skills4EOSC to the role of research and education networks as a pillar of the continent’s digital autonomy.

An issue that shows how sustainability grows from consistent choices, collaboration, and the ability to bring together innovation and responsibility.
