The state of European research networks: GÉANT Compendium 2025 now online
The GÉANT Compendium 2025 has been published: the annual report bringing together data, analysis and insights on Europe’s National Research and Education Networks (NRENs).
For more than twenty years, the Compendium has been a key reference tool for universities, research organisations and policy makers, offering an overview of the evolution of the digital infrastructures that support research and education across Europe.
Each year, the national research networks (NRENs) contribute data on networks, services, users, organisational models and investment. The 2025 edition, presented at the TNC26 conference in Helsinki, continues with the new format introduced last year: a more streamlined report focused on highlighting the main sector trends, complemented by an online platform that makes all the data collected through the annual survey available.
Among the new features in this edition are numerous spotlights dedicated to individual European networks, enriching the data with examples, experiences and insights into the development pathways undertaken in different countries.
One of the organisations featured this year is also GARR, which appears in a spotlight dedicated to the growth of its fibre optic infrastructure. The report highlights how the Italian network has steadily expanded its dark fibre footprint over the past decade, standing out in a European context where many other infrastructures have remained broadly stable in size.
The spotlight also provides insight into the motivations behind this growth trajectory and the role that an increasingly extensive and widespread network plays in supporting the needs of the research and education community.
The Compendium 2025 further includes analysis on investment in digital infrastructures, the evolution of advanced research services, NREN funding models, and the organisational and technological challenges facing the sector. It offers an up-to-date snapshot of the state of Europe’s research networks and their future prospects.
