The new GARR NEWS is now online

The latest edition of GARR NEWS explores the theme of autonomy: the ability to make choices, innovate and think beyond what already exists. An autonomy that is not isolation, but grows through collaboration, shared expertise and the ability to build together what no single organisation could achieve alone.

This issue looks back on GARR’s forty-year history, closely linked to the birth of the Internet in Italy, and explores how the country’s digital autonomy has grown from a strong scientific and research community. That same spirit continues today through collaboration across Europe’s open and neutral interconnection ecosystem, including partnerships with organisations such as Namex.

Collaboration and shared expertise are at the heart of many of the stories featured, from historical scientific archives and cybersecurity to the Open Lab, the GÉANT eAcademy and the Humanitarian Support Group, which supports research networks facing sudden crises.

Autonomy also means retaining control of our digital infrastructure and services. From GARR’s dark fibre strategy and the Workflow Orchestrator to services such as ANTARES and FileSender, GARR continues to make choices that protect independence, flexibility and the freedom to innovate.

A reminder that autonomy is not a destination, but a continuous practice — built on conscious choices, shared skills, collaboration and solidarity.
