GN5-2 represents a significant evolution in the connectivity infrastructure for research and education throughout Europe. The project aims to provide faster, more resilient, and secure services, with a particular emphasis on the innovation of collaborative services, digital identity federation, and the expansion of access to research networks.

It addresses critical priorities such as data protection and inclusivity. GN5-2 will support open science and the development of innovative applications that extend beyond the conventional use of fibre optics, including its use as an environmental sensor for both marine and terrestrial environments, quantum communication, and time and frequency distribution. These initiatives will contribute to strengthening the sustainability of European connectivity, fostering collaboration among research institutions, and enhancing access to digital resources for all users.
