21 October 2025

The full programme of the GARR Workshop 2025 is now online. The event will take place from 3 to 5 November 2025 in the Aula Magna of the Department of Architecture at Roma Tre University.

Three intensive days will be dedicated to discussion among experts from the research and education community on key topics such as digital infrastructures, sustainability, security, digital identities and innovative services.

3 November: Opening and ICT Infrastructures for Research

The workshop will open with institutional greetings from Maurizio Tira, GARR President, and Claudia Battista, GARR Director, followed by a keynote by Massimo Carboni, GARR Chief Technical Officer, offering an in-depth overview of the evolution of Italy’s research network infrastructure.

In the afternoon, the first session will focus on ICT infrastructures for research, with particular attention to the impact of projects funded under the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan). Talks will cover frontier topics such as the supercomputing activities of ICSC, the National Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing, the arrival of the GARR-T fibre network at INFN’s Gran Sasso National Laboratories, and infrastructure standardisation initiatives within the CNR.
The following session on network services will provide an overview of recent progress in automation, telemetry and artificial intelligence for troubleshooting.

4 November: Sustainability and Security

The second day will open with a session on infrastructure resilience and crisis management, featuring contributions on business continuity, disaster recovery, crisis communication and inter-institutional collaborations for security.
Next, a session will be dedicated to sustainability, addressing topics such as energy optimisation in data centres, liquid cooling, efficiency, and tools for reducing energy consumption.
In the afternoon, the security session will focus on quantum key distribution (QKD), new firewall architectures, NIS2, and best practices for the community.

5 November: Services, Applications and Digital Identities

The final day will be dedicated to services and applications, as well as digital identities.
The services session will present practical experiences, including the use of eduVPN, open-source collaborative solutions such as Zulip, and updates on GARR services.
The concluding session will explore digital identity management, ranging from phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication to European federation projects such as OpenID and the EUDI Wallet.

Training Course: How to Set Up a CSIRT

On 5 November, from 15:00 to 17:00, a training course entitled “How to Set Up a CSIRT” will be held by Simona Venuti (GARR).
This hands-on and interactive session will guide participants through the organisation and management of a Computer Security Incident Response Team, covering operational procedures, coordination models and collaboration practices.
