Ongoing Projects

EuroHPC HyperConnectivity provides high-capacity, secure and federated connectivity linking EuroHPC systems, AI Factories, quantum infrastructures and European research and data centres.

As the Italian NREN, GARR supports the integration of Italian Points of Interest (PoIs) into the HyperConnectivity Service Area (HCSA), verifying connectivity requirements and the technical activities foreseen by the onboarding process. The service combines the national connectivity of the NRENs with the pan-European GÉANT backbone, offering capacities in the order of terabits per second and a shared performance monitoring system.

EOSC-CONNECT aims to contribute to building the EOSC Federation by developing national and thematic nodes interoperable with the EOSC EU Node, strengthening the EOSC Core Federating Capabilities and defining technical, organisational and economic models for a sustainable EOSC federation. The project will also support the onboarding of resources and services, the development of federated data, compute and storage capabilities, and the integration of new providers through open calls. The consortium is made up of 22 partners from 14 European countries, including GARR, INFN and the ICSC Foundation for Italy.

The project aims to develop innovative tools and methodologies for using fibre optic telecommunication networks as distributed sensors to detect disturbances in the environments where the fibre infrastructure is deployed. It introduces advanced photonic techniques to measure fibre optic cable deformation through interferometry, employing low-phase-noise lasers integrated on chips, thereby making detection systems more compact, cost-effective, and scalable.

GN5-2 represents a significant evolution in the connectivity infrastructure for research and education throughout Europe. The project aims to provide faster, more resilient, and secure services, with a particular emphasis on the innovation of collaborative services, digital identity federation, and the expansion of access to research networks.

ICDI (Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure) is the national initiative for the Open Science Cloud, created by leading Italian research institutions with the aim of promoting synergies at the national level to strengthen Italy's participation in EOSC.

ICDI brings together experts from major research infrastructures and national digital infrastructures, including the national nodes of large ESFRI infrastructures. The goal is to promote the transition to the Open Science paradigm and the dissemination of FAIR data management practices, finding solutions for their sharing and reuse, and creating new knowledge based on data.

Within the 7-year strategic framework GN5-FPA, GÉANT aims to enhance connectivity and services for research in Europe, bridging the gap between developed and less developed regions. The goal is to provide secure, cost-effective, highly available, and reliable services for high-speed connectivity, identity inter-federation, mobility, trust & identity services, and solutions.
