New Edition of GARR NEWS Available!

Pubblicato il 27 February 2024

The new edition of GARR NEWS is now online. The main theme of this issue is participation, one of the characteristics that strongly define the research and education community. Through the active engagement of all community members, researchers and students can create new opportunities, overcome obstacles, and, why not, breake away from traditional patterns to drive innovation.

What better way to discuss innovation labs than to share the experiences of universities that have successfully addressed the challenges of a digitally fluid environment, such as those found on campuses? Here, we present the experiences shared by the University of Turin and Milan in managing Wi-Fi networks, the response to the cybersecurity challenge at the University of Parma, and the solutions adopted by Bocconi University in Milan, Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, and Parthenope University in Naples to simplify and secure access to digital services.

Another example of participation and collaboration comes from the Italian institute of Metrology (INRIM) and its experience with sensing, a new way of understanding optical fibre infrastructure as sensors to listen to the planet and measure seismic/volcanic activities, and much more.

On an international level, GARR collaborates with the scientific community in defining new projects to leverage research networks not merely as data transmission devices but as means to communicate time/frequency signals and exploit the potential of quantum communication.

Participation is also the glue that binds the research community and will help GARR overcome the new challenges of our time, thanks to a strategic vision that sees an increasingly active role from organisations within the network, both in terms of security and in managing cloud resources.

Finally, we will take a look at the education community and the new strategies adopted by teachers to use artificial intelligence tools, now available to everyone, to actively engage students in educational activities.
