Digital Frontiers: GARR Conference 2025 Programme Now Available
The programme of the GARR Conference 2025 is available online. From 13 to 15 May, at the University of Bari, experts from the technological, academic, and research sectors will gather to share experiences on the evolution of digital infrastructures, the use of artificial intelligence, data protection, and the future of computing for science.
The University of Bari Aldo Moro will host the annual GARR Conference, the Italian research and education network: an opportunity to delve into strategic themes for the future of science and society, and to reflect on how open and independent digital infrastructures can support research, education, and innovation. The 2025 edition, titled Digital Frontiers – Shared and Independent Infrastructures for the Future of Research, will take place in the Aldo Moro Hall of the Department of Law, and as usual, will be preceded by a day dedicated to training.
Each day is dedicated to a key theme, featuring contributions from experts in academia, science, industry, and public institutions.
Tuesday 13 May
The opening day will focus on the evolution of telecommunications infrastructures in Italy, with a panel coordinated by Cristoforo Morandini (TMT-PTS) and featuring prominent experts such as Maurizio Goretti (Namex), Luigi Cudia (Infratel), Salvatore Lombardo (FibreConnect), Fabio Paolo Panunzi Capuano (Sparkle), Massimo Carboni (GARR), and Katia Lazzarini (Open Fiber).
On the topic of European regulation, a presentation will be delivered by the legal expert Innocenzo Genna.
The programme also includes a roundtable dedicated to infrastructures and digital skills for universities and research. It will bring together representatives from institutions, universities, and research organisations, including Giorgio Graditi, General Director of ENEA, Marco Dell’Isola, Dean of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio, representing CRUI, Massimo Bernaschi, Director at CNR, Vito Manzari, Director of INFN Bari, Lucio Badiali, DPO of INGV, and Maurizio Tira, President of GARR.
Wednesday 14 May
The day will begin with a live connection to the Concordia Base in Antarctica to hear from Erik Geletti (OGS) and Alessandro Mancini (CNR) about the evolution of satellite connectivity for science.
Next, the European SENSEI project will be presented by Cecilia Clivati (INRIM), exploring fibre sensing applications.
The sessions will cover topics ranging from artificial intelligence applied to education and research to issues of identity and digital rights, with contributions from legal expert Innocenzo Genna.
Cybersecurity will also be a key focus, with talks by Corrado Giustozzi (Rexilience) and Alessandro Armando (University of Genoa and SERICS Foundation).
Additionally, the Digital Innovation Hub will be featured, with interventions from Tommaso Minerva (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia) and Gianni Fenu (University of Cagliari).
Thursday 15 May
The final day will focus on the evolution of computing for science, including supercomputing and distributed computing.
Among the speakers will be Chiara Scaini (OGS) and Ernesto Picardi (University of Bari).
The concluding session will take attendees on a journey through data, sharing, and protection: topics will include open science, artificial intelligence for cultural heritage, and tools for accessible and reproducible scientific communication, with contributions from Arianna Traviglia (IIT) and Matteo Chiara (University of Milan).
You can take part in person or online (streamed on GARR TV and GARR’s YouTube and Facebook channels).
Please note: the event will be held in Italian only.
