Il ratto di Europa (The rape of Europe)

13 November 2016 | Conferences & Workshops
Il ratto di Europa: una macchina del tempo sulla rete in fibra ottica

From 10 to 13 November 2016 GARR was the protagonist at the Romaeuropa festival with "Il ratto di Europa (The rape of Europe)", a distributed show by the director G.B. Corsetti, which has combined, through the Italian Research Network, sites of high historical value such as the Octagonal Hall of the Baths of Diocletian and Palazzo Altemps, creating a bilateral theater where both actors and spectators interacted in real time with each other despite the distance.

The show, result of the GARR experimentation, shows how the network itself can overcome its function and become a creative place and object of artistic research.

Il ratto di Europa (The rape of Europe)

"The rape of Europe" originated from the experience of La Nave Argo, a short multi-location theatrical piece showcased during the Innovating Colosseo event. This initiative marked the launch of a new fiber-optic network connecting the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the venues of the National Roman Museum (Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Altemps, Palazzo Massimo, and the Baths of Diocletian).

Live interaction between remote places

The show "Il ratto di Europa" works like a time machine and this is made possible thanks to the GARR network, which allows you to connect virtually exceptional sites in an experimentation that fragments the scenic space, reuniting distant places in a single representation digitally increased.

Multiple points of view for a unique show

The Octagonal Hall of the Baths of Diocletian and Palazzo Altemps are the two places that host the public. The actors interact from the two locations thanks to the ubiquity of the network, while the spectators live the performance from two different perspectives. These two sites of the Special Superintendency for the Colosseum and the central archaeological area of Rome are connected by fiber optics from the GARR network as well as the other sites where the scene takes place: Crypta Balbi and National Laboratories of Frascati of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics.

Beyond the current Internet: emotion runs on the fiber

The novelty, from the technological point of view, as result of GARR research and experimentation, is the possibility of transmitting audio-video signals directly on the optical fiber without using the traditional model of Internet transmission, based on the Internet Protocol (IP). The locations of the show are interconnected with each other through a dedicated lightpath: an absolute novelty in the context of a live artistic performance. In this way, the show really goes at the speed of light, which on the optical fiber travels at about 200 thousand kilometers per second: from here, the idea of calling this type of experimentation C-theater.

The technology chosen is a creative reuse of hardware elements already available at the commercial level, engineered to make the experience from the point of view of the performers on the one hand and the audience on the other as transparent as possible. Objective: to make the system available to the theater team without the need for support from network technicians. So, from the point of view of the director, the use of a remote or local camera is almost equivalent, while the latency introduced by a remote actor has been kept at 3 milliseconds, far below that of a normal camera used in this type of setup and well below the human perception threshold (50 ms).

A multidisciplinary collaboration

Archeology and optical fiber, theater and networking, actors and musicians interact at very high definition from distant locations. Past, present and future fused in a virtual environment thanks to the use of new languages and distr-active (distributed and interactive) technologies, which allow us to go beyond the network as we know it today.

From the beginning, GARR has kept alive the attention for the live arts community through collaborations with avant-garde realities, exploiting innovative technologies and thus promoting a contamination of knowledge between scientific and humanistic disciplines.

Places of the show

Palazzo Altemps

The building owes its name to the cardinal Marco Sittico Altemps who bought it in the 1568. The building houses important collections of antiquities and a significant collection of Egyptian works. In the rooms, still partly frescoed, it is possible to admire Greek and Roman sculptures that belonged in the 16th and 17th centuries to various families of the Roman nobility.

Aula Ottagona delle Terme di Diocleziano

So-called for the shape of its plant, square outside but octagonal inside, connected by angular semicircular niches. The dome is a wonderful example of the conquests of Roman architecture with its umbrella form and is part of the the Baths built in honor of the Diocletian Emperor. In 1929 the Octagonal Hall became a Planetarium, the largest in Europe. The subsequent restoration has restored the original appearance of the thermal hall.

Museo della Crypta Balbi

The Crypta Balbi Museum is the result of the first major urban archaeological project developed in Italy and aimed at the recovery of an entire block of the historical center of Rome. Material evidences help us to retrace the history of the block from the first houses of the Republican age, at the birth of the great complex of the Theatre and the Crypta of Balbo (13 BC), to the transformations from the late ancient age to our days.

Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati, Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare

Built in 1955, the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF) were the first Italian research structure for the study of nuclear and subnuclear physics with accelerator machines, and are the largest research laboratory of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the public body for theoretical, experimental and technological research, in the field of subnuclear physics, nuclear and Astroparticle.

Innovating Colosseo: Culture and Research in ultra broadband

13 October 2015 | Conferences & Workshops
WORKSHOP GARR 2024

On the 13th of October 2015 GARR and the Archaeological Superintendency of Rome celebrated the connection of the Superintendency sites to the GARR network with a distributed theatrical and musical performance. The performance organized during the event "Innovating Colosseum. Culture and Research in ultra broadband” was designed and produced by the internationally renowned director Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, who used the GARR network to enable the real-time interaction in high definition of actors located in geographically distant places.

The Colosseum, the Aula Ottagona, the Baths of Diocletian, the Crypta Balbi and the National Laboratories of Frascati of INFN were the locations involved in the show. During the performance two musicians, one in Frascati and the other in Rome, playing together through the application LoLa (the innovative audio-video at low latency realized by GARR and the Tartini Music Conservatory of Trieste), created an evocative soundtrack for drums and bass.

The Archaeological Superintendency of Rome is the first in Italy to connect so many venues in ultra broadband, anticipating by five years the objectives established in the Digital Agenda which calls for connections at 100 Mbps by 2020. The collaboration between GARR and the Superintendency is part of a wider strategy to use new ICT technologies for preservation, study and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of Italy.

he performance is also an example of the broad collaboration in the research community which includes the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the University of Cassino, the Marche Polytechnic University and the Tartini Music Conservatory in Trieste.

GARR has always been involved with the cultural heritage community providing an advanced network infrastructure and innovative tools for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage assets, for international collaborations with universities and research institutions for sharing and transmission of large amounts of data between institutions, and for the use of web applications (virtual museums, virtual archeology, geographic information systems).
In 2015 for the first time monuments of high historical and artistic value were connected through GARR’s optical fibers. Several heritage sites – the Colosseum, Foro Romano e Palatino and the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo, Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Altemps, Terme di Diocleziano), and the Pompei Archaeological Area – were connected thanks to the agreements with the Superintendencies of the Rome and Pompei archaeological sites

Fifth IDEM Federation Conference 2015

13 May 2015 | Conferences & Workshops
Quinto convegno IDEM - 2015

A unique digital identity, enriched with our personal data, allowing access to a variety of online services. This is a well-established reality that has been in place for several years in universities and research institutions in Italy and around the world. In Lecce, from May 13th to 15th, the annual event for sector experts will take place.

Can the Research & Education model serve as a "pioneer" for the development of online access and collaboration in other sectors, starting with schools and the transmission of our cultural heritage, and extending to citizen services? What are the best practices, policies, and technologies that ensure security and privacy in access while also certifying the authenticity and ownership of the connection between the digital user and the real person in situations where this is required?

The Fifth IDEM Federation Conference, in collaboration with the University of Salento, will be held in Lecce at the Officine Cantelmo from May 13th to 15th, 2015, and aims to address these questions.

Fourth IDEM Conference 2014

02 April 2014 | Conferences & Workshops
Quarto Convegno IDEM 2014

The Fourth IDEM Conference kicks off with a forward-looking perspective. Interoperability is the new key challenge for the coming years. The digital identity system used in education and research must become interoperable with public administration services. Similarly, students, researchers, and citizens should be able to seamlessly manage their digital identity, whether issued by their institution, civil registry, or another public office. This federated identity interoperability will not only simplify access but also maximize the return on investments in e-government initiatives.

One of the most natural areas for collaboration between universities and local communities, particularly municipalities, is providing Wi-Fi access to the Internet. The use cases presented at the conference will highlight successful implementations and encourage further partnerships based on this model, extending interoperability to relevant commercial stakeholders as well. Studying and experimenting with interoperable solutions means actively working to eliminate the barriers that still prevent organizations from fully participating in identity federations.

Even in the realm of cultural, artistic, and documentary heritage, unified access to resources can lead to significant cost savings in developing new services—essential for the growth and promotion of these often underestimated sectors.

After four years of official activity, the IDEM Federation has driven numerous initiatives and success stories. Authentication and authorization infrastructures have now matured, streamlining identity management for organizations while enabling more efficient and user-friendly services, paving the way for stronger public-private collaborations.

Moreover, with centralized identity management, organizations can ensure high standards of security and user privacy. This is a major strength, particularly on an international scale, where interoperability depends on aligning with globally shared codes of conduct and standardized trust frameworks.
