Innovating Colosseo: Culture and Research in ultra broadband

13 October 2015 | Conferences & Workshops
WORKSHOP GARR 2024

On the 13th of October 2015 GARR and the Archaeological Superintendency of Rome celebrated the connection of the Superintendency sites to the GARR network with a distributed theatrical and musical performance. The performance organized during the event "Innovating Colosseum. Culture and Research in ultra broadband” was designed and produced by the internationally renowned director Giorgio Barberio Corsetti, who used the GARR network to enable the real-time interaction in high definition of actors located in geographically distant places.

The Colosseum, the Aula Ottagona, the Baths of Diocletian, the Crypta Balbi and the National Laboratories of Frascati of INFN were the locations involved in the show. During the performance two musicians, one in Frascati and the other in Rome, playing together through the application LoLa (the innovative audio-video at low latency realized by GARR and the Tartini Music Conservatory of Trieste), created an evocative soundtrack for drums and bass.

The Archaeological Superintendency of Rome is the first in Italy to connect so many venues in ultra broadband, anticipating by five years the objectives established in the Digital Agenda which calls for connections at 100 Mbps by 2020. The collaboration between GARR and the Superintendency is part of a wider strategy to use new ICT technologies for preservation, study and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of Italy.

he performance is also an example of the broad collaboration in the research community which includes the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the University of Cassino, the Marche Polytechnic University and the Tartini Music Conservatory in Trieste.

GARR has always been involved with the cultural heritage community providing an advanced network infrastructure and innovative tools for the protection and promotion of cultural heritage assets, for international collaborations with universities and research institutions for sharing and transmission of large amounts of data between institutions, and for the use of web applications (virtual museums, virtual archeology, geographic information systems).
In 2015 for the first time monuments of high historical and artistic value were connected through GARR’s optical fibers. Several heritage sites – the Colosseum, Foro Romano e Palatino and the Museo Nazionale Romano (Palazzo Massimo, Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Altemps, Terme di Diocleziano), and the Pompei Archaeological Area – were connected thanks to the agreements with the Superintendencies of the Rome and Pompei archaeological sites

Fifth IDEM Federation Conference 2015

13 May 2015 | Conferences & Workshops
Quinto convegno IDEM - 2015

A unique digital identity, enriched with our personal data, allowing access to a variety of online services. This is a well-established reality that has been in place for several years in universities and research institutions in Italy and around the world. In Lecce, from May 13th to 15th, the annual event for sector experts will take place.

Can the Research & Education model serve as a "pioneer" for the development of online access and collaboration in other sectors, starting with schools and the transmission of our cultural heritage, and extending to citizen services? What are the best practices, policies, and technologies that ensure security and privacy in access while also certifying the authenticity and ownership of the connection between the digital user and the real person in situations where this is required?

The Fifth IDEM Federation Conference, in collaboration with the University of Salento, will be held in Lecce at the Officine Cantelmo from May 13th to 15th, 2015, and aims to address these questions.

Fourth IDEM Conference 2014

02 April 2014 | Conferences & Workshops
Quarto Convegno IDEM 2014

The Fourth IDEM Conference kicks off with a forward-looking perspective. Interoperability is the new key challenge for the coming years. The digital identity system used in education and research must become interoperable with public administration services. Similarly, students, researchers, and citizens should be able to seamlessly manage their digital identity, whether issued by their institution, civil registry, or another public office. This federated identity interoperability will not only simplify access but also maximize the return on investments in e-government initiatives.

One of the most natural areas for collaboration between universities and local communities, particularly municipalities, is providing Wi-Fi access to the Internet. The use cases presented at the conference will highlight successful implementations and encourage further partnerships based on this model, extending interoperability to relevant commercial stakeholders as well. Studying and experimenting with interoperable solutions means actively working to eliminate the barriers that still prevent organizations from fully participating in identity federations.

Even in the realm of cultural, artistic, and documentary heritage, unified access to resources can lead to significant cost savings in developing new services—essential for the growth and promotion of these often underestimated sectors.

After four years of official activity, the IDEM Federation has driven numerous initiatives and success stories. Authentication and authorization infrastructures have now matured, streamlining identity management for organizations while enabling more efficient and user-friendly services, paving the way for stronger public-private collaborations.

Moreover, with centralized identity management, organizations can ensure high standards of security and user privacy. This is a major strength, particularly on an international scale, where interoperability depends on aligning with globally shared codes of conduct and standardized trust frameworks.

29-NOVEMBER 2012 - ROME

The first Italian NGN is now a reality

  • Once again, digital innovation starts from the school-university-research chain: the first Italian NGN is not just high-performance connectivity, but an integrated digital infrastructure capable of supporting participation in international research projects, thanks to its intercontinental connections, and an enabling platform to easily and transparently access computing resources, storage, big data, and Cloud services. Digital infrastructures are therefore a key element of Italy's strategy to reduce the fragmentation of national participation in the European Horizon 2020 program.

"The availability of a true Next Generation Network," commented Minister Francesco Profumo, "will be an important ally in introducing 'more Europe' into the Italian research and innovation system—aligning our programming, mechanisms, and tools with European ones."

"The availability of a true Next Generation Network," commented Minister Francesco Profumo, "will be an important ally in introducing 'more Europe' into the Italian research and innovation system—aligning our programming, mechanisms, and tools with European ones.
This is a strategy we are strongly pursuing at the Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research, and it was also the inspiration behind the recent public consultation on Horizon 2020.
To improve our position in Europe, it is important to create a system, not only at the level of Big Science but also for all those sectors now embracing new technologies, starting with schools. Indeed, such an infrastructure has already enabled the first 100 institutions to be connected via broadband, up to 1 Gbps, with the addition of another 100 shortly.

With the aim of reaching the majority of school buildings, this will significantly accelerate the process of computerization and the use of digital educational content in schools. With its vast user base and a total traffic volume of over 85 Petabytes, recorded between January and October 2012, GARR-X is the largest and most significant community network in our country. Designed around the needs of users, the infrastructure is adaptable to real demands.

Thanks to direct control over the lower levels of the infrastructure and synergy with local government networks, GARR-X is ready to adapt to future developments, both in terms of bandwidth needs and technological evolutions, without the need for significant investments due to the absence of constraints on capacity and connection technologies.

All of this has been made possible through extensive planning and collaboration with key players in the Italian network landscape. "The collaboration with GARR has led to the creation of something truly innovative," emphasized Telecom Italia's CEO, Marco Patuano. "For us, it was also an opportunity to leverage our expertise in designing increasingly advanced and high-performance networks.
This initiative also further strengthens our relationship with the academic and scientific community, with the belief that education, research, and innovation are the driving force behind the country's growth."

In short, GARR-X should not only be seen as a new tool, however powerful and innovative, in the hands of researchers, teachers, and students, but also as an experience to be replicated in other contexts, capable of having an impact on the infrastructure of the entire country.

"NGN has been widely discussed and continues to be talked about in our country, but so far, little has been seen in practice," concludes Marco Pacetti, President of the GARR Consortium, the non-profit organization that created GARR-X. "Today, Italy is still far from a 'true' broadband network, widely distributed. With GARR-X, we wanted to create an infrastructure that could fill this gap, at least for the education and research community, and help it reach the goals of Europe 2020."

Currently, our member institutions can access the network with connections of at least 100 Mbps. We hope this will be a signal for others."

GARR Conference 2011

08 November 2010 | Conferences & Workshops
Conferenza GARR 2011 - Da 20 anni nel Futuro

In 20 years of research networking we have created new environments and new possibilities with our users. What will we do tomorrow?

The GARR network was born in Bologna 20 years ago and since then has been on the side of Italian researchers in their daily work. The GARR Conference 2011 will show how the research networks and their users have changed the way science is done in the last twenty years creating the e-Science and will discuss the evolution of this paradigm for the next twenty.

Today, users from different disciplines and increasingly permeable amongst their access information produced large amounts of data and transforming it in new knowledge through the use of digital networks and infrastructure always more transparent and integrated.

Over the next twenty years, the continuous evolution of the scientific disciplines and collaboration on a global scale will implement the production of data to store, manage and transform into new knowledge. The 2011 Conference will therefore focus on the access mode, organization and conservation of such distributed data, which will be independent of its geographical location and the user. There will also be talks about policies and technologies to ensure the security and integrity of the data, without sacrificing easy access by authorized users.
